Members of Swansea Canal Society and staff from Craigfelen School in Clydach seen next to “Nellie”, one of the Society’s small working boats. The boat is on loan in the classroom of the children of Year 1 at the school, as they investigate and explore canals and waterways as part of a topic called “Land Ahoy”. Nellie sailed into the classroom today and will be berthed there for the children to enjoy until July, when she will be needed again to work on the canal. The Society’s Education Officer, John Donovan, will support the school in this topic over the next term.

John wrote this charming letter from Nellie to the learners!

Hello Children of Year 1, I am Nellie. I am a very hard working type of boat known as a “Dory”. I am used when the people who work on the Swansea Canal want to cut and clear branches and rubbish.

After I have a lot of fun with you in your classroom, I will go back to the canal to work.

I hope you will come and see me when I am in the water, working on the canal.

But now I am very excited about spending time with you all,

Nellie X
