Canoe hire opened as planned this Sunday, but the very poor weather kept all would-be canoeists away.

News had reached us of a very large tree brought down in recent heavy winds. It completely spanned the canal from the off-bank and blocked the towpath, although work had already been done to reopen that route.

Therefore, despite the heavy rain, the canoe hire team, under Gordon’s instruction, put out a raft and with chainsaw and ropes, proceeded to trim logs and branches until a narrow but navigable channel was created to reopen the canal. The trimmings were brought ashore and disposed of.

Removal of the remaining substantial trunk section will take greater planning and effort another day!
