Following on from the phenomenal success of last year’s “Spooky” Halloween event in Coed Gwilym Park, the Friends of Coed Gwilym Park, Clydach Heritage Centre and the Swansea Canal Society decided to host an Easter Fun Day. Mercifully, the weather today was glorious, with plenty of warm sun and none of the gales of last autumn.

We decided to stick to the winning formula of “Spooky”, with the Canal Society hiring out canoes and kayaks plus selling craft items, the Friends cooking up a storm with burgers and hot dogs, and the Heritage Centre providing drinks and light refreshments plus running an Easter themed treasure hunt.

The various teams were soon set up and running. Here are a few photos taken before the event was underway.

But of course the day was all about the local community and soon the park was packed with excited kids and mildly anxious parents as they set sail for uncharted waters – well, the canal up to Trebanos! As usual, one or two of the paddlers were somewhat lacking in nautical skills, but everyone had great fun.

The Friends were doing a roaring trade and actually were so busy that they had to send out for additional supplies!

This, the second of our Fun Days was a great success too, made all the more enjoyable by the lovely weather. Volunteers from three groups worked hard to run the event and local families had great fun. The whole day was another brilliant example of a real community effort.

Thank you everyone, volunteers and visitors alike, for making the day so special, and thank you to parents for permitting the photos to be taken.

But sadly, it all proved too much for one volunteer, who decided the only way out was to dig an escape tunnel.
