Today’s work party was based at Trebanos locks. Mercifully, the weather was considerably cooler than last week, with just a hint of drizzle in the air. The volunteers took on two tasks.
|
The heaviest work of the day involved retrieving stone from the upper lock. Gordon built a fantastic pulley system that made relatively easy work of hauling the stones. Soon a large pile of good quality stone was ready for use by the Waterway Recovery Group in August.

The second task was to bash the Himalayan balsam. Today was probably the last opportunity for the year as the flowers are already shedding seeds. Sharon and Dave worked hard by the upper lock. The other four photos show “before and after” shots of John G & Martin between the locks and Sue & Andy below the lower lock.

Tea and chat, with cakes baked by Ronnie using fruit from her garden. Delicious!

After tea, Martin and Sharon took to “Nellie” to cut back willow from the pound below the lower lock.

An excellent day’s work in pleasant conditions. And the best news of the day is that we have been awarded the Green Flag Community Award for the seventh consecutive year. Well done everyone.

I love seeing the photos of progress along the canal and seeing faces I know and some I don’t. One of these days I will turn up and hopefully get stuck in for a session. Besides trying to improve Rabbies Walk between Resolven and Abergarwed, I am work party organiser for the Neath and Tennant Canal Trust and also a Community Councilor for Resolven so my time is quite busy now.
I look forward every week to the photos and account of what’s been done along the Swansea Canal.
