WILDFLOWERS/WEEDS ALONG THE CANAL

Wildflower seeds  were sown aong side the the towpath during recent repairs.  They are now coming into blossom, providing a source of nector for bees and other pollinators.  Hopefully these areas will gradually be increased as work progresses.

WILDFLOWERS/WEEDS ALONG THE CANAL

There has been some discussion regarding wildflowers and planting alongside the canal.  There are many wildflowers, easily recognisale specieis, but there are also many that are not.  The plants support a diversity of wildlife and play a very important part in the biodiversity of the local area.  Great care is taken when working along...

Work Party : Sunday 11th June

There was another successful working party today.  This time  they cleared fly tipping about 200 metres north of bridge number 7,  on the offside bank. Unfortuneately, all of the rubbish was not removed due to lack of time, but an improvement has been made, and at a later time we will go back to continue...

WASH HOLE WORK PARTY: 23.5.17

Several tasks are involved in  the improvements that we, with the help of the Canal and River Trust, are making north of Upper Trebanos Lock where the canal disappears into the pipe on its dark journey to the centre of Pontardawe. Five  foot long treated timber poles are driven-in along the off bank to support...

16.5.17. THE CO-OP AND THE OLD STONE BARGE.

As Monday’s deluge continued unabated into Tuesday we split into indoor and outdoor parties. It may have seemed an easier shift for Gill and Sue looking after our gift and craft stall indoors in the foyer of Clydach Co-op but the weather was not going to make it a bumper ...

Change of Venue for this Tuesday’s Work Party (16th May).

WE WILL NOT BE WORKING AT TREBANOS THIS WEEK AS WE DO NOT HAVE THE PERSONNEL TO TAKE THE TRAILERS BACK TO THE DEPOT IN CLYDACH.  THEREFORE, WE WILL INSTEAD BE WORKING FROM THE CLYDACH DEPOT ON THE OLD STONE BARGE MONUMENT SITE AND CLEARING VEGETATION FROM THE  CANAL CHANNEL UP TO PONT JOHN BRIDGE....

THE CO-OP LOCAL COMMUNITY FUND: SUPPORTING OUR CANOE PROJECT

The Swansea Canal Society is very honoured to have been chosen as one of two local charities in the Clydach area to take part in the Co-op initiative that allows Co-op shoppers to donate 1% of their purchases of Co-op branded goods to good causes. We will be recipients of this scheme up to September...

9.5.17 ROCK, WATER, SAND, SILT and MORTAR

. Our volunteers are of all ages, skilled and unskilled, young and old (though a few more of the former would not go amiss). After a few weeks of joining us, they find their favourite occupations and generally keep to them. Gareth, above, is a great hewer of wood and mixer of cement, and is...

WORK PARTY SOUTH OF PONTARDAWE PLAYING FIELDS: 2.5.17.

We are halfway to rebuilding the tow-path edges south of the 800 yard piped section at Pontardawe Playing Fields. This  restoration will prevent further erosion of the banks  and any subsequent flooding.  Most of the material used is provided by the Canal and River Trust though much of the local Blue Tennant Sandstone is...

A TALE OF 2 GERRYS, 1 JOHN AND AND A CHEON. 25/4/17.

Here we are three hundred yards north of Upper Trebanos Lock, not fifty yards from where we lose the canal in an 800 yard pipe. The section is not the prettiest but that is far prettier than not being able to see it at all. The  Swansea Canal...

To coincide with the launch of the Summer 2017 canoe and kayak hire scheme, an event was held on Sunday 16th April in partnership with Cwmtawe Cycle Group, the Heritage Centre and Clydach Bowls Club to showcase the facilities at Coedgwilyn Park and the activities offered by the participating groups. Although the weather put a...
