AIMS & OBJECTIVES OF OUR CHARITY...
1. The restoration, reconstruction, preservation and maintenance of the Swansea Canal
2.
The conservation of its natural character as a navigable inland waterway for the benefit of the public.
3. To advance
public education in the history and use of the Swansea Canal.
4. To provide or assist in the provision of facilities
for recreation or other leisure time activities of the public, in the interests of social welfare, with a view of improving
their conditions of life.
135 SWANSEA CANAL SOCIETY MEMBERS...
The Swansea Canal Society was formed in 1981 and currently has 135 members. The Society is run by a group of
volunteers. We became a registered charity in 2004.
Our aim is to restore the
derelict Swansea Canal to navigation standard and to improve the Swansea Canal's environment for the benefit of its flora
and fauna.
Another of our aims is to promote the canal for recreational and educational uses.
WHO WE ASSIST & COMMUNICATE WITH...
The SCS Committee assists
the local authorities in their urban regeneration schemes in the canal-side communities.
We attempt
to achieve these aims by lobbying the canal owners (British Waterways), local councils and other public bodies.
We have been carrying out practical restoration projects to improve the canal for over 25 years. Those projects
already completed have given the public greater access to and awareness of the Swansea Canal.
We produce
a quarterly newsletter which is distributed to all members and we have monthly committee meetings. We organise workparties
throughout the year to improve the canal environment, along with social events for the benefit of the members - these
include historical walks, talks and slide shows and social functions.
