An Autumn Meander:Ynysmeudwy to Bridge 8

We started off in Ynysmeudwy car park, next to the Ynysmeudwy Arms, now once again open for business. An excellent info panel in the car park gives you an idea of the history of the area.

Ynysmeudwy Uchaf Bridge (No.9) is next to the five bar gate at the car park exit and takes you across the canal to the tow path side.

The evening sun was casting low, long shadows across the canal. Just north of Lower Ynysmeudwy Lock I got this photo.

Lower Ynysmeudwy Lock is famous for having the last remaining Locksman’s Hut on the canal. It was restored by Clive Reed and members of the Swansea Canal Society in the 1980s. Then, it boasted a slate roof but this in time was stolen and it now has a modern roof.

The next bridge, Ynysmeudwy Ganol (no 8), gives you access to the Pontardawe-Ynysmeudwy Road.

Bridge 8, like much of the Ynysmeudwy part of the canal is surrounded by beautiful trees and hedgerows, many of which were planted by the canal society in the eighties.  Daffodils and more small trees were planted in recent years by the society as well. If you are lucky you may even catch a glimpse of Michelle paddling along the canal in her canoe.
