Work Party: Tuesday 18th July 2023

Oh dear, another drizzly day! The volunteers dodged the light rain and were soon hard at work in the Buried Lock site and Coed Gwilym Park.

JAD provided a fantastic boot-full of plants, mostly sedums, that he had propagated. Sue and Chris barrowed the plants to the garden bank, where they were planted by JAD, Martin, Moira and Sue. Not much watering-in was needed given the rainy forecast.

Andrew, Gareth and Andy harvested more large lumps of slag that Sharon and Chris added to the abutments to the base of the garden bank.

Gordon used another of his marvellous contraptions to move concrete blocks that he used to strengthen the wall at the head of the by-wash.

Andrew added the finishing touches to his set of steps up the garden mound.

Time for tea with cakes baked by Andy. Our newest volunteer, Colin, wondered what on earth he had let himself in for as he munched away in the rain.

Gill was spotted picking rubbish from the overgrown canal between the Buried Lock and Coed Gwilym Park. She found time for a bit of texting en route.

The main event of the day in Coed Gwilym Park was the annual visit by the Ammanford Ramblers, but before they arrived, Ronnie and Dave tidied the gardens.

Alan and Paul cut pieces of sturdy foam that will be used to create buffers on the edge of the canal. They will have the two-fold benefit of protecting the canoes and preventing fingers being trapped between the boats and the bank.

Mike gave the ramblers a safety briefing before they took to the water. Regrettably, three of them fell in but they managed to dry themselves before everyone enjoyed lunch in the community cafe.

Another busy and productive day at the two locations. Everybody had fun despite the dull weather.
