Working Party Tuesday 19th April 2016

This week the working party was again assisted by eight volunteers from Virgin Media, several of whom were making a 031rreturn visit to help us.

The day began with a health and safety briefing given by the Chair of the Society, Gordon.

One group set about weaving willow hurdles along the bank of the canal at Trebanos Lock.

The freshly cut willow is planted into the soft silt on the canal bank. This method will produce a living fence, which forms an attractive edge along the off-bank.

Other volunteers continued digging silt out of the canal where a stream feeds into the canal. The gravel that is dug out of the canal is put into sandbags that are then used to repair the canal bank.

Volunteer Toby appears to be stuck in a hole and Martin rushes to his aid,  while volunteer Gordon is content to poke the canal with a big stick.

Time for a tea break.

022rThree Virgin Media volunteers enjoy a well-deserved cuppa. The weather was wonderful, the volunteers worked hard and much good work was done. Thank you all.

Further down the canal near Clydach Lock a Moor Hen was spotted, apparently nesting in a very exposed location on the off-bank.
