Work Party: Tuesday 12th November 2024

On a bright but rather chilly morning, a somewhat reduced set of volunteers met at the Swansea Canal Centre to carry on from where we had left off next week. But first, David and Ronnie dashed up to Coed Gwilym Park where David tidied the rudbeckia and Ronnie planted rosemary, ice dance grass, sedums and hebes.

John Squared hung a clock in the centre. Here they are distracted by Anna caught in the act of destroying a football.

Aled, Chris M, Chris G, Martin, Sharon and Moira tackled the brambles beneath and the ivy upon Pont John.

Andy on the bank and Gordon in “Nellie” cut down yet more buddleia. Lance, Phil, Bob, Rowan and Gerry, in a welcome return to volunteering with us after far too long a gap, dragged the brash across the bridge to what is now an enormous waste pile.

Chris M followed along, hacking his way through the bramble with a brush cutter

Looking back over a job well done.

Tea was taken in the warmth of the centre with tasty sandwiches and cakes provided by Annette.

After tea, work continued around Pont John. Martin clipped some drooping branches. He is cutting so rapidly that steam appears to be rising from his shears!

And finally, as the Heras security fencing has had to be moved from the canal side outside our new and wonderful Swansea Canal Centre for duties elsewhere, Daley Homes have provided safety blocks to replace them. There is quite a drop from the car park area down to the canal so the white “Lego Blocks” provide an aesthetically pleasing safety barrier at the edge. James Daley and a fellow worker manipulate the first few blocks into position as the crane lowers them down.

Another fantastic day’s work – we seem to be getting the hang of this volunteering lark!
