Work Party: Tuesday 18th March 2025

Another chilly but very sunny morning and another session split between the Swansea Canal Centre and Coed Gwilym Park.

At the centre, the big task was to start on preparing a low-level path to give good access the the wall that we hope to repair in the future. A huge telegraph pole was cautiously rolled into place and secured with ingenious clamps, designed by Gordon, attached to scaffold poles driven deep into the ground.

Once the pole was secured, sturdy netting was stapled to it and then lined with sheeting. Rubble was tipped in and levelled out. Eventually, the entire path will be coved in earth and grass to provide soft landscaping.

As one section was completed, the next was cleared. The path will be extended along the entire length of the wall over the next week or two.

John Gw and Andrew secured a large vice, scavenged by Gordon, to the bench in the workshop.

David tidied up the flowerbed.

Meanwhile, in Coed Gwilym Park, Moira, Christina, Janet and Martin worked really hard to weed, water and feed the lovely beds by the canoe store. They also found time to water and feed the five apple trees which were transplanted a month ago from the Hebron Road site to a new circular site outside the Community Pavilion Cafe.

Moira and Chris prepared a new hole for an acer which needed transplanting, having been first planted too near the towpath.

The same procedure was needed for a second plant.

Bob removed cleats from one of our boats is sadly unfit for use now. The cleats will be used as moorings for the trip boat at the Canal Centre.

Tea was taken with a selection of sugar-free goodies baked by Andy. We were very pleased to be joined by Steve Court – the canal YouTuber “Court Above The Cut”. He is filming a piece about our lovely canal. Take a look at his channel here.

Another lovely day for a bit of brisk exercise. Steve was very impressed with the number of volunteers and our very hard work. We thank him for visiting and look forward to seeing his film.
