Work Party: Tuesday 20th May 2025

Yet another day of glorious sunshine: when will it all end? With apologies for the lack of photographic evidence, the day started with John Gw and Pete in the Swansea Canal Centre installing ladder brackets to aid safe storage of our drag forks and Chris M, Duncan, Lance and Sharon at the Buried Lock site tending to the saplings and adding to the stainless steel mesh safety barrier.

The rest of the volunteers beavered away in Coed Gwilym park. Sue, under the supervision of Anna, and Andy, Pete and Annette cleared vegetation from the very edge of the towpath. The wall that we created several years ago is standing the test of time but some of the cap stones are loose – maybe a repair session is needed.

John Grav watered the flower beds as Chris Grav, safely returned from an expedition around the hotels in Paddington, Jan and Moira tended to them. After tea, top soil was brought in by hand by Chris M and John, this time with Cerys in charge. Martin was able to sow wild flowers. Let’s hope there is some rain soon! {Be careful what you wish for, Martin!}

Tea was taken in the warm sun. Annette was the caterer for the day. Actually, she lovingly created scrumptious egg sandwiches but the cakes were more Kipling than Hudson! Delicious nonetheless.

Gardening continued after tea and, in addition, Mike and Sharon set sail to cut overgrowth from the off bank. Lance, Duncan and Paul accompanied them to pull their cuttings and extraneous logs out of the cut.

Sue finished the day by hand cutting long and unruly grass alongside our very first flower bed. What a grand job she did – even without the close scrutiny of a Labrador

Such a lovely day to be out and working hard. Plenty of work, plenty of grub and plenty of chat – life is sweet.
