TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR USERS OF CANOES AND KAYAKS ON THE CANAL

The aim of this information briefing is to minimise risks to people enjoying boating on the canal. It is intended as a guide and has been written as a result of detailed risk assessments.

All persons hiring a canoe or kayak MUST wear the BUOYANCY AID provided.

SUITABLE FOOTWEAR must also be worn, as we cannot guarantee that there will not be sharp substances in the water, should you capsize and need to stand in the canal. FLIP-FLOPS are not allowed.

Everyone has a responsibility for their safety and that of other canal users. The following rules and guidance have been produced for the safety of all users:

1  Whilst boating all persons must wear the buoyancy aids provided. Clothing and footwear must be suitable for the prevailing weather conditions.
YOU ARE LIKELY TO GET WET FROM PADDLING CANOES AND KAYAKS.

2  All instructions from canal staff must be obeyed; anyone causing situations that are deemed to be unsafe will be warned and may be asked to leave the canal.

3 Although the canal is not deep, the bottom consists of deep mud. If you capsize stay with the boat and one of the canal staff will be with you as soon as possible with a safety throw line to assist you.

4 All boaters must keep within the boundary markings at each end of the canal.
ANYONE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE A BOAT FROM THE CANAL WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE.

5 As with all inland waterways there maybe the presence of water-borne bacteria, it is therefore advisable to wash hands before eating.

6 Although we hope to hold these sessions throughout the summer, as these are manned by volunteers, please check on the website for any changes to the dates and times above.

7 Children under 18 years will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.

CHILDREN

All children must be over 3 years old and 90cm in height.

 

All children under 8 years old must weat a helmet and have an adult in the same boat.All children using a single kayak must be over 8 years old.

All under 18’s must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult.

BUOYANCY AID FITTING

Wherever possible all adults should put on their own under the fitter’s instruction.

Children’s buoyancy aids and helmets should normally be fitted by the responsible adult.

If the fitter needs to assist with children’s buoancy aids and helmets it must be with the express permission and in the clear view of the responsible adult.

CANOE HIRE CLERICAL AND SECURITY PROCEDURES FOR VOLUNTEEERS

Start of the day

1 Fasten the cash box to the table

2 Check the next ticket number

3 Count the cash float and enter it on the daily record sheet.

Start of the hire

 

1 Draw the hirer’s attention tot he information board and the hbire form

2 Check that all the party are fit to use the boat(s)

3 Ask the hirer to fill in a hire form

4 Enter the fleet number(s) of the canoe(s) and kayak(s) hired, the number of persons int he boat(s) and the time the hire starts on the ticket counterfoil

5 Enter the hire fee paid and freturn time ont he hirer’s portion of the ticket

6 Give the hirer his portion of the ticket and place the hirer’s security item(ds), the com,pleted hire form and the counterfoil in a plastic envelope

8 The envelope goes in the locked drawer of the fililng cabinet

9 Check that the helmets and buoancy aids are fitted properly

 

End of Hire

 

1 Check that all the cano(s) andkayak(s0 hired and the buoyancy aids and helmets are properly returned.

2 Use the serial number on the hirer’s ticket to identify tghe corresponding security envelope

3 Ask the hirer abouth their experience, ask them to sign the bottom of the form

4 If there have been any problems or other notable circumstances note them in the diary or accident book as appropriate

5 Return the security item*(s) to gthe hirer

6 Place the ticket counterfoil and hire form in the bottom of the cash box

 

End of Day

1 Use the ticket counterfoils to add up the numbers of canoes and kayaks hired out

2 Enter the numbers on the daily record sheet together with the number of the last ticket issued

3 Place the ticket couterfoils for the day in a caash bag and filee in the couterfoil folder

4 Place the hier sheets in the appropriate folder

6If banking some oof the cash fill in the paying in book and write the amount banked on the daily record sheet

7 Be sure to leave at least £50 float in the cash box (enough to deal with the firest hirers having nothing less that a £20 note.
