THE CANAL BENEATH OUR FEET (18): TOWPATH PROGRESS, 22/23.9.17

IMG_20170911_161009430_HDRThe Old Depot Yard transformation in Pontardawe Road Clydach continues.  Above, looking north,  is the line of the new towpath now flattened and ready for tarmacccing. Further up large rubble still remains (photo below right) but this will soon be gone. The wooden structure on the right of the photo indicates the width of the buried lock. The photo, below left, is all that can be seen of the lock from ground level today. The metal grid is a later 1970s addition.

The photo, below left, shows what the lock looked like in the last years of its life above ground. I am grateful to Clive Reed for providing us with this rare photo.

And finally, a  view, complete with cobwebs, of the water still runnning through the  lock
