Work Party: Tuesday 14th February 2023

What a lovely, sunny day for a bit of hard labour! The volunteers met in Coed Gwilym Park where the biggest task was to extend a flower bed by adding another length of retaining wall.

Gordon and Paul mixed concrete by hand. Andrew took over when Gordon popped off to a meeting.

Alan T and Malcolm brought several loads of stones from Trebanos locks.

Most of the gang had a go at laying the stones. Mike F pondered the logistics of a central entrance to the garden. Ease of access with a low wall versus more soil retention with a higher wall. Steps may be the answer. Looking good so far, but to be continued next week.

Chris and Gareth used a wheelbarrow to bring weeds pulled from the cut previously. The weed will enrich the garden.

Alan W managed to tidy the garden in amongst the frantic building work.

A generous donation of a mature pieris from a Trebanos resident was collected by trailer and planted along the canoe store tow path. We are very grateful for this kind gift.

Time for tea, with Valentine’s Day themed cakes baked by Alan and Jan W. Paul from Whitethorn’s dropped in for a chat.

Elsewhere, work continues in the Buried Lock site. At the southern end of the temporary by-wash there is still more to be done, although most of the breeze blocks are in place. In the new boat basin, the heavy duty butyl liner is now being laid over the underlay.

The Clydach Canal Centre on Hebron Road is now completely surrounded by scaffolding.

And finally, Gareth is addressing his devoted acolytes who are thrilled to welcome him back after his protracted illness. Oh no he isn’t – he’s flogging tickets for Gill’s up-coming concert on 3rd March in Clydach Community Hall. All proceeds donated to local hospitals. Please support this event if you can.

Another busy day in beautiful conditions. Who knew that whether or not to add a step to a garden could cause such lively and protracted debate?
