Work Party: Tuesday 29th April 2025

The volunteers returned to Ynysmeudwy Locks this week, after a gap of far too long, to have a general tidy-up in glorious sunshine.

The first task was to retrieve large logs and a stop plank from the cill of the lower lock. The plank was put back where it should be.

Dave started off by clearing the bridge and then moved on to cut back a fallen branch that was causing no obstruction whatsoever.

Chris and Moira, ably assisted by Anna, pulled balsam from along the towpath before joining our new recruit Bob, Mike and Andy, looking particularly gormless in this photo, doing more of the same on the island between the lock and its by-wash.

The most arduous task of the day was to drag weed, mainly irises, from the mouth of the lock. Gordon deployed his block-and-tackle rake that was manoeuvred into position by Lance, John and Rowan, under close supervision by Bob the Boat and Alan, before being pulled across by Phil, Bob, Burt and Andy.

Sue walked up from Holly Street collecting litter as she went before deftly flicking a few cans form the pound between the locks.

Tea was taken with treats both savoury and sweet (including a first attempt at a Bienenstich (Google it!)) baked by Andy.

After tea, Chris and Moira retreated to the Canal Centre to weed and water whilst the weed removal continued until we had had enough of the heat. Who knew that getting muddy and exhausted could be so much fun?
