THE CANAL BENEATH OUR FEET: (21) WHAT’S BEEN DONE SO FAR (21.12.17)

TIME TO TAKE STOCK. WE TOOK POSSESSION OF A LARGE PORTION OF THE COUNCIL YARD IN PONTARDAWE ROAD, CLYDACH IN DECEMBER 2016 THANKS TO THE  GENEROSITY OF THE CITY AND COUNTY OF SWANSEA.   THE CANAL WAS BURIED IN  1973 IN A PIPE BENEATH THE YARD AFTER WHICH TWO MUNICIPAL HIGHWAYS DEPARTMENT BUILDINGS WERE ERECTED ON TOP OF IT. ONE BUILDING HAD TO BE DEMOLISHED AND ONE HAD TO BE MOVED.

AN ENTRANCE FOR LORRIES HAD TO BE BUILT INTO THE SITE FROM PONTARDAWE ROAD. WITH THE PERMISSION OF ST BENEDICTS CHURCH  WE PUNCHED A GAP THROUGH THE CHURCH CAR PARK AND ERECTED GATES.

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK  ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS, OUR HARD WORKING   CONTRACTORS, THE CITY AND COUNTY OF SWANSEA, THE CANAL AND RIVER TRUST FOR THEIR EXPERTISE, OUR CATERERS AND, NOT LEAST, OUR PROJECT MANAGER FOR MAKING ALL THIS HAPPEN IN LESS THAN A YEAR.

 

NEXT YEAR, WE WILL OFFICIALLY OPEN THE TOWPATH WHICH WILL BECOME PART OF SUSTRANS ROUTE 43.
