THE CANAL BENEATH OUR FEET (22): OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE NEW TOWPATH

20180104_115902THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE NEW TOWPATH AND CYCLE PATH THROUGH THE OLD HIGHWAYS DEPOT IN PONTARDAWE ROAD,  CLYDACH WILL TAKE PLACE ON TUESDAY 23.1.18 AT 11.00AM.

We are busy tidying up the site in preparation for the big day. Below we see the now redundant green fencing being dug up. It will be reused around the site where needed.

Still a lot more to be removed though!

Crucially, the fencing has been taken up firstly from the main vehicle access to the work site. Below, Gordon and John inspect the now unimpeded route out  of the site; up the ramp, over the towpath, through the new wooden gates and up to the steel gates into Pontardawe Road.

Once the towpath has been offically opened we will be looking to uncover the buried lock and  discover the exact route of  the by-wash that went round it. Michelle has been busy building a scale model of the lock  which you can see below. In the top right hand corner there is a tractor bringing a boat up the new slipway while a giant hand points to the new lower lock gates.  In the bottom right hand corner the new bridge over the canal is shown. Sometime to go before the model becomes a reality, of course! It will be invaluable, however, in our bid for funding the project.
