Work Party: Tuesday 10th February 2026

A dull and damp day today but luckily the predicted heavy rain did not materialise. The volunteers, reduced a little in numbers due to illness and hospital appointments, met at the Swansea Canal Centre and were soon occupied with a variety of tasks.

The biggest job, that continued both sides of tea break, was to clear the lower path and weed the adjoining flower bed. We were really pleased to be joined by two new volunteers from Morriston Hospital. Nathan is recuperating after a serious accident and Anthony volunteers in the Community Garden as well as working in the hospital.

The chaps finished clearing the edge of the towpath so the whole stretch from Pont John to the Mond Bridge is now looking at its very best.

Alan and Sharon re-installed the Pont John information panel. They very sensibly decided to site it a little way from the bridge so walkers can read the panel whilst enjoying an excellent view of the bridge.

Another job that continued before and after tea was to plant two pine trees. Martin, Moira and Andy took rather longer than expected to complete this task as they encountered an impenetrable concrete slab in one of the holes! The sapling in this hole will just have to do its best to flourish.

Mike walked down to join us, collecting rubbish all the way.

Tea was taken with delicious snacks, both sweet and savoury, prepared by Christina.

The gardening continued after tea and, in addition, “Nellie” was tipped upright so she could drain in readiness for future outings.

And finally, an ivy-covered branch was cut back.

We worked so hard today that we were able to knock off early. We hope that Anthony and Nathan enjoyed themselves and will be back with us soon.
