Work Party: Tuesday 12th August 2025

Another lovely day, nice and dry, not too hot. The volunteers tackled a number of tasks at the Swansea Canal Centre.

Bob had to bale out the trip boat once again. Not too much rain over the last few weeks but still a few bucket-fulls had accumulated in the boat.

Christina weeded the flower beds.

Martin looked after the large garden, including planting a hardy arum lily generously donated by Fran, one of our Welsh learner friends.

John Gw continued to improve the toilet and shower room in preparation for the WRG camp.

Alan, Bert, Gordon and Phil hacked out patches of poor ground and then laid fresh concrete. Alan then moved on to install a second safety barrier. After tea, Phil was left on his own to continue the concreting.

John Gr used his kayak to access and pull out vast patches of water irises. Andy and Peter then drag the irises out of the canal. Very hard work, particularly for John, but well worth the effort as roughly 30 metres were cleared completely in a couple of hours.

Mike carried on with clearing the endless amounts of rubbish carelessly dumped all along the canal. He was last heard muttering about “Those blinking Rizlas” (other brands of cigarette papers are available).

Tea was taken with a selection of sweet and savoury bakes prepared by Andy. We were pleased to welcome Mikk Bradley, who was here to advise us on plans for reinstating the gates on the Clydach Mond lock. Gordon presented him with a copy of the Swansea Canal book.

A fairly small group of volunteers got through a lot of work. Well done everyone.
