Work Party Tuesday 19th February 2019

Another very pleasant morning in mid-February and we were back on the canal at Coed Gwilym Park in Clydach. No fewer than twenty-four volunteers came out to lend a hand. It is so gratifying to see so many people freely giving of their time in this way.

Volunteers Alan and Martin were busy preparing three more of Alan’s wonderful hand-made bird boxes. The canal is a marvellous wildlife corridor, and these boxes were built to be put up along the canal.

Alan was ferried up the canal by canoe and successfully fixed the boxes on appropriate trees on the off-bank, being careful to ensure a north-facing orientation. While there, Alan also carried out repairs to the Swansea Canal Society sign.

Volunteer Mike was also carried across the canal and did sterling work with his trusty litter-picker. Not to be out-done Gill jumped onto a kayak and collected flotsam and jetsam along the canal. Well done both of you.

This week we had a visit from Kathryn Britton, Project Officer, Keep Wales Tidy (NPT). She was welcomed to the site by Martin, and was very impressed with the effort that volunteers put into making the canal a well-maintained, clean, natural multi-use corridor.

We again had our very own dynamic duo ‘The Two Gareths’ on mixer duty, while Mike, Alan and David prepared the foundation for the canal bank edge. The team was able to extend the bank a further twelve metres along the canal.

Time for a well earned cuppa and a piece of home-made cake. Another very enjoyable and productive work party.
