Work Party: Tuesday 26th September 2023

Back in the Buried Lock site today to continue clearing up in preparation for the grand opening next week. Much improved weather and an excellent turnout of volunteers this week. First up, Chris disappeared to retrieve a shopping trolley from the cut (sorry Chris, no photo). Duncan, Andrew, Mike & Colin removed loads of previously cut weed from the sluice. They even recruited “Nellie” to carry the weed along the freshly filled basin.

Most of the volunteers cleared accumulated rubbish from the land adjacent to the basin. These few representative photos give only an impression of the incredible amount of junk that was removed. Gareth looks very pleased with the end result.

Andy & Sue carted previous weeks’ weed off to the compost heap.

In the garden, Martin, Ryan & his dad continued the good work started last week in the appalling rain.

Jackie from the Neath Canal Ty Banc volunteer group had an ‘away day’ on the Swansea Canal this morning. We were very grateful to her and the Ty Banc group founder, Yun Yun Herbert, for coming over to work with us today. They were both a great help weeding the grass. Here are the two of them, with Yun Yun on the extreme left, being shown round the Buried Lock Site by Annette and Sue. Sorry that the shot appears to have been taken in a war torn London after the blitz. This is the idyllic view they were actually looking at, with the sky reflected in the newly watered canal route!

Tea was taken in the site office, due to a sudden downpour. Ronnie & Andy were this week’s bakers.

An excellent morning’s work with a near-complete compliment of workers in good weather soon had the yard looking spic and span.
