Work Party: Tuesday 6th February 2024
Somewhat dreich today, cool with a couple of showers, but nothing to deter the stalwart volunteers. Most activity was in the Buried Lock site but first up in Coed Gwilym Park: Chris and Colin planted a couple of shrubs, Dave trimmed fallen ivy and Ronnie, Moira and Sue started the mammoth task of checking the equipment in the canoe store. |
In the Buried Lock site, Martin and Carly were keen to tidy the garden. This will be their last chance for a few weeks as the contractors are itching to crack on. |
As for the last few work parties, the main job in hand was the by-wash wall. Bob and Gareth mixed the mix, Phil barrowed it and the majority of the vols built the wall, both by extending its height with blocks and placing more lining stones. |
Tea was taken in the site office as a shower scurried over. Chris’s cakes were superb, as usual. |
As we packed up for the day, the contractors moved in to remove waste material prior to starting on the lock. It seems that relatively little of the lock was preserved to a high standard so most of the work will be new build rather than restoration. We cannot wait! |
And finally, it is with great sadness we note the passing of John Allen. He worked tirelessly to clear the canal of litter and to keep Gordon supplied with fizzy drinks. His wry comments and prodigious appetite for cake will be always remembered. Rest in peace, John. |
