Work Party & WRG: Tuesday 2nd September 2025

Busy day today! The volunteers scattered themselves far and wide in the morning and then joined the Waterway Recovery Group at the Buried Lock site for lunch. Steve Court joined us to take more footage for his “Court Above The Cut” YouTube channel. But first, and most importantly, we welcomed Dianne Price and her dog Millie.

Alan, Dave, Mike and Pete worked on the 200m stretch of towpath between Bridge 9 and the Ynysmeudwy Road to clear the overgrown vegetation that had been reported by one of the regular walkers.

It was mostly Himalayan Balsam, so we mostly bashed! David clipped and Pete snipped! We also cleared long grass, brambles and nettles, and pruned a few low-hanging branches.

It looks a lot better, hopefully our ‘observer’ will notice!

Sharon, Christina, Lynn and Moira cleared more of the towpath downstream of the Mond bridge in Clydach. Still a middle section to be cleared. There was a mild disagreement with the CRT ecologist but she has now given us permission!

Here is our new volunteer recruit, Dianne. She and Martin set to work immediately weeding and tidying the lovely garden beds next to the Canoe Store.

A huge branch fell across the towpath and into the canal downstream of the Trebanos locks last week. Most of it had been removed but John, Phil and Andy hauled out much of the remainder. John did what he could with a hand saw from his kayak but we will need to revisit later with a chainsaw.

We all met at the Buried Lock to treat the WRG to lunch prepared by the ladies plus cakes baked by Andy. Everyone enjoyed the feast and it gave the opportunity for our volunteers to chat with the WRG vols.

The WRG will be lining the by-wash all this week, continuing the work started by our vols. They have faced atrocious weather so far so it was a relief to have a fairly dry day today. They are making excellent progress.

And finally, here is Alan being interviewed by Steve Court. We cannot wait to see his next YouTube video.

Today showed the very best of the Swansea Canal. The volunteers were busy along much of the canal, WRG were hard at work on the lock and Steve was there to record it all. Congratulations and thanks to everyone!
