Work Party 14.2 (3)

Four different activities spread out on four different sites today.

The work to remove the heaps of weeds and grass from the towpath side went on and was successfully completed. The Lliw building supply bags are excellent for filling up with the vegetation and  are weightless once on board the boat but the off-loaders on the other side have a steep embankment to overcome so the bags feel twice as heavy lugging them up to the composting site. The cry from the off side is ‘Keep them light’ and the reply from the towpath is usually unprintable. The solution is obviously more bags, but smaller ones.

Work Party 14.2 (2)

A little later, our education officer, John Donovan and our bird expert, Alan Williams, were joined by pupils and staff from Pen-y-Bryn Special School, Morriston to help put up several bird boxes  in the new nature reserve in Coed Gwilym Park. This wooded area which runs along the Swansea Canal has been generoulsy donated to the Swansea Canal Society by the City and County of Swansea.
The pupils had already painted the boxes at school and they helped choose the trees for each well disguised bird box. Alan ascended his portable ladders to nail them in place.
It was a marvelous joint enterprise as Whitethorns Day Care Centre staff and day attenders also arrived to give Alan  a round of applause as he finished each box with both thumbs intact.
We were also pleased to have Rhodri Bowen from the Canal and River Trust with us lending his support to this new Wildlife project which will enhance the canal.
The Pen-y-Bryn pupils will be back with us later in the spring to see if the boxes are being used. By then they will have helped us lay bark paths though the reserve to make it accessible to all.
We look forward to a long association with them.

Work Party 26.4 (10)Down by Clydach Lock, Mike and Martin were busy clearing up the litter at the side of the Aqueduct. Three large blue blags were filled. The Aqueduct is a beautiful spot and every piece of litter is an eyesore and every piece of plastic a danger to wildlife, including the lovely dipper we saw on the stones of the Lower Clydach River whilst there.

Back at the Clydach Police Station, or rather, behind the Clydach Police station, Gareth contines to beaver away at building a landing stage from disused sleepers. This will help us ferry the workers across the canal more easily and be even more use when we get a trip boat on the canal. Maybe not this year for that, though.
