City Nature Challenge 2025 – The Results Are In

We are pleased to say that the results of City Nature Challenge 2025 are in and are very excited to confirm that it was the biggest City Nature Challenge: Swansea yet!

Please watch a short highlight video here.

This year, Swansea truly showed up for nature!

With 1,827 observations and 611 species identified so far (with many more still being ID’d!), a huge thank you goes out to all the organisers, event leaders, volunteers, supporters, and participants of City Nature Challenge 2025: Swansea — and to the 83 fantastic recorders on iNaturalist who contributed their sightings and expertise. You’ve helped make this happen!

Across the City and County of Swansea, 22 organisations and groups hosted 28 public events, welcoming an incredible 680 attendees to connect with local wildlife.

Swansea ranked 278th out of 669 cities across 62 countries — placing us in the top half globally!

Global highlights from CNC 2025:

• Over 100,000 people took part – a new record!
• We passed 3 million observations during the challenge
1 million observations were uploaded in just one day
50,000+ species were recorded in a single day – that’s ~1 in every 40 species on Earth! ?

Here are the collective results:

Observations: 3,310,131

Species: 73,765+ including more than 3,338 rare/endangered/threatened species

Observers: 102,945

From 669 cities in 62 countries on 6 continents

Most-observed species globally: Common Dandelion

City Nature Challenge is an annual four-day global bioblitz-style competition, where cities are in a friendly contest with each other to see who can make the most observations of nature, who can find the most species and who can engage the most people.
This April marked ten years of the City Nature Challenge, themed “Bringing the Globe Together for Biodiversity.” It was the third year that Swansea taking part in the challenge.

Next year’s City Nature Challenge is the 11th City Nature Challenge, save the dates for April 24 – 27, 2026
