The Canal Beneath our Feet (10). Demolition Underway. 11. 6.17

demolition in the depot    The heavy plant has arrived. Our wonderful contractors moved into the Old Highways depot, Pontardawe Road, today and have begun the demolition of the framework of the building that was built over the buried lock in the mid seventies. A lot of the interior fittings have already been removed by Gordon and Gareth as you can see in the right hand picture.

The smaller portakabin which looks to be under threat by the JCB will be moved to a safer corner of the depot and will act as our Visitor Centre and Work Base allowing room for the walls and gable end of the main building (not in shot)  to be removed by the destructive power of the JCB (JS130).

A mobile scaffolder which also arrived on the back of  a huge green tractor will give access to the roof struts. All the necessary asbestos checks have,of course, been completed.

It should not be forgotten that Sunday was a day of three separate work sites. While all this work was being done in Clydach, the second get together of the Pontardawe Work Party was meeting north of bridge 7 where there has been much fly tipping. They did great work. See the separate picture and blog. At the same time, the Sunday Canoe Hire opened in Coed Gwilym Park as it does each Sunday regardless of the weather conditions. The dedication the volunteers who arrive at ten in the morning and do not leave until 3.00pm is not something that we must ever take for granted.

Congratulations to everyone who made this a Triple Whammy Sunday.
