Work Party: Tuesday 10th December 2024

Oh, Storm Darragh – What have you done? A chilly day was devoted mostly to removing trees from the cut. Thank goodness for some hard labour to keep us warm. Most of the vols went to Coed Gwilym park but Martin stayed at the Canal Centre doing what Martin does best – gardening!

Two trees were down either side of the carved tree. By far the bigger of the two was blocking the towpath as well as the canal. Gordon set to with Chris’s chainsaw and others used the mini chainsaw plus a selection of hand tools.

The smaller tree was dragged from the canal.

Soon the towpath was clear and the small tree completely removed. Clearing the large tree from the cut will have to be done by the Canal and River Trust but now everyone has clear access along the towpath.

Tea was taken in the warmth of the Canal Centre. Andy was the baker.

After tea, we worked around the centre. Rowan and Phil manoeuvred a large branch over the fence, the wall was checked as a possible task for a Waterway Recovery Group next summer and yet more debris was dragged out.

Another busy day, mostly spent clearing up after the storm. There’s more to do next week – when will these awful storms end?
