The Buried Lock is Buried No More!

Swansea Canal Society is pleased and excited to announce a grant of £967,000 has been awarded to the society from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund. This funding is for the completion of Phase 2 of the Hidden Lock scheme to reopen and restore the 120 metre stretch of canal and a lock in Clydach, which have been buried underneath a previous Council storage yard since the 1970s. Once restored this will mean boats, canoes and kayaks can use the canal from the centre of Clydach to Trebanos. Phase 1 of this project was delivered earlier this year with opening of a new boat basin and by-wash.

Plans for the site include a green corridor planted with over a hundred trees and wildflowers to increase the biodiversity and provide a haven for wildlife.

Work is already well underway as can be seen in this terrific Wales Online article.

Swansea Canal Society already provides affordable access to canoeing and kayaking from its base in Coed Gwilym Park and hopes to extend that experience to even more people with the new boat basin and portage ramp.

The Shared Prosperity Fund is part of the UK Government’s levelling-up agenda, and is administered by Swansea Council.
